Best Time to Visit Cabarete

When to visit Cabarete, Dominican Republic: how the trade winds, surf swells, hurricane season and busy travel periods shape each time of year.

Explore the Guide

Cabarete is warm all year, so the real question is not whether the weather will be good but what you want to do when you get there. Kiters chase wind, surfers chase swell, and families often care most about calm mornings, school holidays and storm risk. This guide breaks the year down by those priorities. It is written for trip planning; always check live forecasts and local operators before you commit to dates.

When is the best time to visit Cabarete overall?

For most visitors, the best overall window is roughly December through April. The weather on the north coast is warm and generally drier, the Atlantic hurricane season is over, wind for kiteboarding is often reliable, and the winter swell season brings good waves to Playa Encuentro. It is also the busiest stretch for travelers from North America and Europe, so book flights and accommodation early, especially around Christmas, New Year and Easter week (Semana Santa), when Dominican families also head to the beach.

If you would rather trade a little weather risk for fewer people and easier bookings, the shoulder months of May and November are worth a look. Days are still hot, the town is quieter, and many schools and restaurants operate normally.

When is the best wind for kitesurfing in Cabarete?

Cabarete is known for the northeast trade winds that blow along the north coast, boosted in the afternoon by a thermal effect as the land heats up. On a typical wind day the breeze is light in the morning, builds toward late morning and peaks in the afternoon, which is why lessons and downwinders are usually scheduled after lunch.

Local kite schools generally describe summer, roughly June through August, as the most consistent wind season, with a second good period in the winter months. No month is guaranteed, though, so if kiting is the main reason for your trip, ask a school about recent conditions and leave a few spare days in your plan. Beginners often find that mornings, when the wind is lighter, are useful for practice on land and in the water with an instructor.

When are the best waves for surfing at Playa Encuentro?

Playa Encuentro, a few minutes west of town, is the main surf spot near Cabarete. It picks up swell generated by storms in the North Atlantic, so the biggest and most consistent waves tend to arrive in the northern-hemisphere winter, roughly November through March. Summer usually brings smaller, gentler surf that suits beginners and longboarders.

Because Encuentro has reef and rock in places and can have strong currents, first-timers should take a lesson with a local surf school, which will choose the right break for the day. Mornings are usually best for surfing, before the afternoon wind roughs up the water.

What about hurricane season?

The Atlantic hurricane season officially runs from June 1 to November 30, with the most activity usually from August through October. Most days in this period are ordinary hot, humid days with passing showers, and many travelers visit without trouble. Still, a tropical storm can bring heavy rain, rough seas and flight disruptions with only a few days' notice.

If you travel between June and November, buy travel insurance that covers weather disruption, book refundable rates where you can, and follow official forecasts from the U.S. National Hurricane Center and Dominican authorities in the days before your trip.

Is Cabarete good for a family trip, and when?

Families who want calm water should aim for mornings, when the wind is lighter, and pick sheltered sections of beach; ask your hotel which stretches are best for swimming that day. School holiday periods, including Christmas, Easter and July, are the busiest and priciest, so lock in accommodation early. Whatever the month, plan for strong tropical sun: hats, reef-safe sunscreen and plenty of water make a big difference, and the afternoon wind can make it feel cooler than it is.
