Cabarete vs Punta Cana: Which Is Right for Your Trip?

Two very different Dominican Republic holidays: a resort zone on the east coast, and a beach town on the north coast built around wind, surf and independent travel. Here is how to choose.

Read the Comparison

Most first-time visitors to the Dominican Republic have heard of Punta Cana and have never heard of Cabarete. That is not a verdict on either place; they are simply built for different trips. Punta Cana is the country’s all-inclusive capital, a long strip of large resorts on the east coast with its own international airport. Cabarete is a small town on the north coast where the hotels are independent, the restaurants are on the sand, and the afternoon wind brings kiters and windsurfers from everywhere. This guide compares them on the questions travelers actually ask, written by people who live on the Cabarete side and will tell you when Punta Cana is the better answer.

The short version

Choose Punta Cana if you want one price, one resort, pools, kids’ clubs, a swim-up bar and the least possible planning. Choose Cabarete if you want to learn or practice a water sport, eat at a different place every night, walk a real town, take day trips into the hills and caves, and spend as much or as little as you like. If you cannot decide, the honest tiebreaker is activity: people who want to do things pick Cabarete, people who want to stop doing things pick Punta Cana.

Getting there: airports and transfers

This is the practical difference that shapes everything else. Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ) sits beside the resort zone; many guests are at their hotel within half an hour of landing, and the resorts run the shuttles. Cabarete is served by Puerto Plata’s Gregorio Luperón International Airport (POP), about half an hour away by road, and by Santiago (STI), roughly two hours inland. Flights into POP are fewer than into PUJ, so compare fares from your home airport before you compare hotels.

Do not plan to “pop over” from one to the other. Cabarete and Punta Cana are on opposite coasts, and the drive takes most of a day. If you want both, book a domestic connection or accept a long transfer and give the trip ten days or more.

Where you sleep and how you pay

Punta Cana is the all-inclusive model at full scale: large resorts, meals and drinks bundled, entertainment on site, and a price you know before you leave home. It is easy, and for a week of pure rest it is hard to beat. The trade-off is that most guests see little beyond the resort gate, and excursions and off-property dinners cost extra.

Cabarete runs on independent places: beachfront hotels, condos, guesthouses and a handful of small resorts, with restaurants and bars along the sand and in town. You pay as you go. That makes a budget trip possible and a comfortable one straightforward, but it also means you are doing the planning. Our Cabarete travel guide covers where to stay by area, and the restaurants and nightlife page is the dinner list.

The water: calm pools or trade winds

Punta Cana’s beaches are long, white and generally calm, which is exactly what a resort holiday wants. Cabarete’s beaches change through the day: calm mornings for swimming and surf lessons, then the northeast trade wind builds after lunch and the bay fills with kites. If you want to learn to kiteboard, windsurf or surf, Cabarete is the Dominican Republic’s established town for it, with schools, rentals and a beach dedicated to kiting. Local schools generally describe June through August as the most consistent wind, with a second good window in the winter months; winter also brings the best surf to Playa Encuentro. The best time to visit Cabarete page breaks the year down by sport.

If nobody in your group wants to get on a board, that is not a reason to avoid Cabarete, but it does remove its biggest advantage.

Beyond the beach

From Cabarete you can be in El Choco National Park’s caves and lagoons in minutes, ride horses in the hills, visit the Damajagua waterfalls on a day trip, or spend an afternoon in Puerto Plata’s colonial center. The things to do in Cabarete list is long for a town this size. Punta Cana’s excursions exist too (catamaran trips, Saona Island, buggy tours) but they are sold as packaged outings from the resort rather than things you wander into.

Weather and seasons

Both coasts are warm all year and both sit inside the Atlantic hurricane season, which runs June 1 to November 30 with the most activity from August through October. The practical differences: Cabarete’s north coast gets more winter swell and the afternoon wind, which is the point for some travelers and a nuisance for others; Punta Cana’s east coast is typically calmer. December through April is the busiest and most expensive stretch in both places, so book early for Christmas, New Year and Easter week.

Who each one suits

Punta Cana: first-time Caribbean travelers who want zero logistics, large family or group trips where everyone needs something different on site, weddings and honeymoons built around a resort, and anyone whose ideal week is a lounger and a book.

Cabarete: active travelers, couples and friends who want a town rather than a compound, kiters, windsurfers and surfers at any level, longer stays and remote workers, and anyone who likes choosing a different dinner every night.

A fair word about Punta Cana

We run a Cabarete guide, so take this as the honest caveat: if your group has small children, limited mobility, or simply wants to be looked after for a week, Punta Cana’s resorts do that better than a beach town can. Cabarete rewards people who want to be out and about. Pick the trip you actually want, not the one that sounds more adventurous on paper.

Questions travelers ask

Is Cabarete or Punta Cana closer to the airport?

Cabarete is about half an hour by road from Puerto Plata’s Gregorio Luperón International Airport (POP) and roughly two hours from Santiago (STI). Punta Cana International (PUJ) sits next to the Punta Cana and Bávaro resort zone. Driving between Cabarete and Punta Cana takes most of a day, so treat them as two separate trips rather than a day trip.

Which is cheaper, Cabarete or Punta Cana?

It depends on how you travel. Punta Cana is built around all-inclusive resorts where most costs are bundled into one price. Cabarete is a town of independent hotels, condos, guesthouses and restaurants, so you pay as you go and can spend very little or quite a lot. Compare a full week, including flights and transfers, before deciding which is cheaper for you.

Is Punta Cana better for families?

For a resort holiday with kids’ clubs, pools and everything on site, Punta Cana’s all-inclusives are built for that. Cabarete suits families who want an active, independent trip: lessons in the water, walkable restaurants and day trips, with calmer mornings on the beach before the afternoon wind.

Can I kitesurf in Punta Cana instead of Cabarete?

There is kiting on the east coast, but Cabarete is the Dominican Republic’s established kite and windsurf town, with a beach dedicated to it, many schools and the most consistent afternoon trade winds. If wind sports are the point of the trip, Cabarete is the simpler choice.

Can I combine both in one trip?

Yes, if you have ten days or more and accept a long transfer or a domestic flight between the two coasts. Most travelers pick one; those who combine them usually do a few resort days in Punta Cana first and finish active in Cabarete, or the reverse.
